But even here, Lena couldn’t escape State 3’s influence. Her hands, working the clay, moved with a rhythm she’d learned from Miles that morning. Lena understood. She sometimes missed having a fixed professional identity, a business card that said something more specific than “Creative Partner.” But she couldn’t imagine going back to the old way, trapped in a single role, her potential limited by organizational charts and job descriptions.
Before bed, she checked her tomorrow’s preliminary schedule. She’d be working with a team of physicists she’d never met, tackling a problem she didn’t yet understand, using skills she didn’t know she had.
